As we welcome all back to another school year, it was an exciting moment this past Tuesday when Sydney, an active volunteer of Therapy Dogs International (TDIA), walked though our front doors with her trainer, Mrs. Christina Grimaldi. Sydney entered Saint Martin de Porres School joyfully wagging her tail, dressed in our Saint Martin de Porres School Spirit Wear, as she returned to Saint Martin’s as a tutor for the 2016-2017 school year.
Sydney, a certified “tail waggin’ tutor” joins us every Tuesday morning for one of our Reading Tutoring Programs. The main objective of this program is to provide a relaxed atmosphere which allows students to practice their reading skills. By sitting down next to Sydney and reading to the dog, the children in grade 2 relax, pat the attentive dog, and focus on the reading material, while all threats of being judged are put aside.
This reading tutoring program provides a wonderful, exciting opportunity for our students as they flourish with reading and improve their reading skills. I could not think of a better way to encourage and improve reading than to practice these skills with one of Saint Martin’s best furry friends, Sydney!
