DRESS CODE – 2017-2018

BOYS – GRADES 1-8

 

  1. Navy DRESS slacks.  We do NOT consider as dress slacks any of the following:

 

–        denim, jeans, or corduroy pants, regardless of cost or quality

–        pants with designer labels, studs, decorative stitching or large back pockets.

–        navy blue pants that fade.

 

Slacks should not be rolled up. The uniform slacks should be purchased from Li’l Darling Shoppe only.

 

For the months of September, October, May and June, students in Grades 1 through 8 may wear tailored navy blue walking shorts of medium length.  These must be purchased through Li’l Darling.

 

  1. White shirt – long or short sleeves. We expect the shirt to be buttoned at the collar.  If long sleeves are worn, they may not be rolled up, and must be buttoned at the cuff.  Colored or designed tee shirts may not be worn under the white shirt.  During the months of September, October, May, and June, a white polo shirt with the blue St. Martin’s logo may be worn to replace the white shirt and school tie. Shirts, dress and polo, must be kept tucked into the pants or shorts. Short sleeve shirts or long sleeves may be worn year round.  The polo shirt must be ordered from Li’l Darling.  All shirts must fit properly.  School logo fleece may be worn.

 

  1. The white polo shirt may be worn with either the shorts or the dress slacks. The dress shirt may not be worn with the shorts.

 

  1. Ties: (worn from September through May) purchased from Li’l Darling or at St. Martin’s:

Plaid Long Tie – Grades 1-5

Navy Blue School Tie – Grades 6-8

 

  1. Sweaters – solid NAVY pullover vest with school logo. The uniform vest must be purchased through Li’l Darling.  The vest is always worn with long pants.  A solid navy V-neck sweater with school logo may be worn in lieu of the vest.  It must be purchased through Li’l Darling.

 

  1. Belts – dark brown, blue or black (solid in color) must be worn with slacks and shorts in grades 5 – 8.

 

  1. Dark colored dress shoes – the color must be black. Shoes may be tied, buckle or loafer type.  We do not consider boots, work boots, sandals or shoes that come above the ankle to be dress shoes.  Should special shoes be needed, you must present a doctor’s note.

 

  1. Socks must always be worn. Black or navy blue socks only must be worn with the winter uniform.  Black or white socks only, that cover the anklebone, must be worn with the summer uniform. No low rise or no-show socks allowed.  No logos, stripes, or trim on socks. No colors on socks at all.
  2. Sneakers are worn for Physical Education Classes only. They should be all white or all black.  Roller sneakers, light-up sneakers, or any other color other than all black or all white are not allowed.

 

  1. Earrings are not permitted in school, nor is any jewelry in visible pierced body parts. Boys who wear necklaces and bracelets can wear one of each.  No wearable devices/smart wearables, including smart watches and health wearables with display, with the exception of a fit bit without internet/wifi capabilities. Choker type necklaces are not allowed.

 

  1. Hair should be neat, trimmed above the collar, ears and above the eyebrows, and clean at all times. No fad or fade hair styles or head shaving is permitted.  No facial hair.  No hair coloring, no “hawk” of any kinds, glitzing, frosting, highlighting or any change of hair color is permitted.  No dreadlocks allowed.

 

BOYS – PRE-KINDERGARTEN & KINDERGARTEN

 

Summer and Winter gym suits and white sneakers.   All Pre-Kindergarten & Kindergarten students will wear the St. Martin de Porres School gym uniform on a daily basis.  Warm weather wear consists of the tee shirt with the logo and matching shorts.  The uniform sweatsuit will be worn from November through April.  Dress-down days will be designated by the principal.  These uniforms may be purchased from Li’l Darling.

 

GIRLS – GRADES 1-8

 

  1. Plaid Jumper – Grades 1-4 – must be worn with the girl’s tie

 

  1. Plaid Skirt – Grades 5-8 – Uniform skirts must be below the knee

 

OPTIONAL:  Navy blue DRESS slacks may be worn from September 1st to June 30th.  During September, October, May and June, students may wear tailored navy blue walking shorts of medium length or navy skorts.  These are purchased from Li’l Darling Shoppe, this is for all grades.

 

  1. Plain white cotton blouses, with collar, long or short sleeves. If long sleeves are worn, they should be buttoned at the cuff.  During the months of September, October, May and June, a white polo shirt with the St. Martin’s logo may be worn to replace the white blouse.  This polo shirt must be purchased from Li’l Darling.  Vests must be worn. All shirts must be tucked in. For girls in Grades 1-4, the plaid girl’s tie must be worn with the long or short sleeve blouse.  Colored shirts under the uniform shirt are unacceptable.  Girls cannot wear the cotton blouse without a sweater or vest.

 

  1. The polo shirt may be worn with either the uniform skirt or the shorts. The blouse cannot be worn with the shorts.  The polo shirt cannot be worn with the jumper.

 

  1. Navy knee socks or full navy tights – solid navy. NO stockings.  In May and June, September and October, the girls may wear white socks only that cover the ankle.  Short socks should not be worn with the tights. No golf socks, no-show or low rise socks. No logos, stripes, or trim on socks.

 

  1. Sweater: Grades 1-4 – NAVY vest, v-neck or cardigan with slacks.  The cardigan may also be worn with jumper; not the vest or v-neck ALL sweaters must have school logo.

 

Grades 5-8 – NAVY sleeveless pullover vest is mandatory. NAVY long-sleeved v-neck pullover sweater with school logo may be worn in lieu of the vest.  The vest or the v-neck must be worn from November 1-April 30 with skirt or slacks.  ALL sweaters must have the school logo.  Cable knit, loose knit, and oversize sweaters are unacceptable.  The uniform sweaters and vest must be purchased through Li’l Darling.

 

  1. Black colored, flat, sturdy dress shoes. One and one-half inch heels or higher are unacceptable.  The shoes may be tied, buckle or loafer type. Saddle shoes may be worn if they are kept clean.  Boots, jellies, slingbacks, work boots, shoes that come above the ankle, ballet-type slippers, slip-ons, sandals, and clogs are not considered uniform shoes.  Should special shoes be needed, you must present a doctor’s note.  Heels of shoes should be low (not more than one inch) and not platform style.  No high-heeled clunky shoes allowed.  No heels higher than 1-inch for school.

 

  1. Make-up is not appropriate and is not permitted. This includes lip gloss and eye make-up.  Nail polish is not permitted.

 

  1. Jewelry – small post earrings only (one per ear), only one simple chain and one bracelet, fit bit or wristwatch is permitted. Other jewelry, such as pins, dangling bracelets and earrings or jewelry in visible pierced body parts is not permitted.  Choker-type necklaces are not permitted.  No wearable devices/smart wearables, including smart watches and health wearables with display, with the exception of a fit bit without internet/wifi capabilities.

Only small barrettes (2 or 3) or clips are allowed.  Color coordinated hair band and scrunchies may be worn.  No oversized bows, flowers, novelty headbands, no triangular scarves may be worn.  No fad hairstyles or head shaving is permitted.  No corn rows or dreadlocks allowed.  No hair coloring or changing of hair color is allowed, i.e. ombre, frosting, glitzing, highlighting, etc.

SPECIAL OCCASIONS

 

  1. You must present a written excuse to the school office if it is necessary for you to be out of uniform at any time. If you do not bring a note, a parent will be called.

 

  1. On various occasions throughout the school year, you will be permitted to have “dress down days.” On these days, the school uniform is not worn, but you will be expected to be in dress clothing.  Remember the types of slacks and shoes that are not considered to be dress wear.  Clothing made out of denim material is not considered dress wear.

Girls – tight, low-cut, short (no more than 2 inches above the knee), skin-revealing, see-through, strapless, crop-top, sheet inserts, and backless outfits are not allowed.  Hip-hugger pants, jeggings or leggings are not allowed.

 

  1. Boys – no belly shirts, low-riding pants, or skin-revealing outfits.

 

  1. If appropriate clothing is not worn, a parent will be asked to bring a change of clothing.

 

  1. The same rules for make-up and jewelry apply for special occasions.

On SMDP Spirit Wear days students are only permitted to wear SMDP spirit wear or                                                        their regular SMDP school uniform.

 

  1. The principal has the right to have a student change into their regular uniform if the rules of the dress down day are not followed correctly.

 

GYM UNIFORMS

 

Regulation tee shirts with logo and gym shorts with logo must be worn by students in Grades Pre-K-8 for gym classes.  These must be ordered through Li’l Darling Shoppe.  Sweat pants and crewneck sweatshirts worn for gym classes by Grades K-8 during cold weather must be

navy blue, and must have the school logo. These must be ordered from Li’l Darling.  Hooded sweatshirts are not allowed.  Gym tees and shorts have the school logo.  Gym clothing with other logos is unacceptable.  White or black sneakers and only white crew socks are worn with the gym suit.  No no-show socks are to be worn.  All gym shorts for all students may NOT be more than 2 inches above the knee and be loose fitting.

 

All Pre-Kindergarten & Kindergarten students will wear the St. Martin de Porres School gym uniform on a daily basis. Warm weather wear consists of the tee shirt with the logo and matching shorts.  The uniform sweatsuit will be worn from November through April.  Dress-down days will be designated by the principal.  These uniforms may be purchased from Li’l Darling.  Only white sneakers can be worn in PreKindergarten and Kindergarten.

 

For students in grades 5-8 repeated violations of the uniform policy (3 or more violations) will result in the child not making the honor roll or participating in non-uniform days.

 

For students in grades pre-k – 4th grade repeated violations of the uniform policy the parents will be notified immediately and the parents will be required to bring the appropriate uniform and will result in the child  not being allowed to be part of non-uniform days.
